TOM WESTBROOK

Professor of Leadership Studies & Director of Leadership Concentration

Tom’s Favorite LEAD memory:

In 2014 during our LEAD at Sea trip to the Bahamas while sailing the ‘Liberty Clipper’, Megan Nelson found her leadership voice by instructing her watch on how to furl a jib while standing out on the bow sprit. This is a task that requires skill and courage as you find your footing while sailing and perched 25 feet above the water. Megan was somewhat shy and introverted but lead her watch on exactly how to furl the jib. It was a pivotal moment in the maturity of their watch and in Megan’s development as a student leader.

Education:

Tom attended Tusculum College in Greeneville, TN where he received his Bachelor of Science in Mathematics. He went on to earn his MSED with focus in Student Personnel Administration from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, IL. Tom earned his Ph.D. in Higher Education with focus on Adult Learning from the University of Iowa.

Courses Taught:

Tom teaches LEAD 050, 100, 110, 190, 169, and 199 courses. His teaching philosophy is to strive to bring the content to life and to elevate our students understanding of leadership and the capacity as a student leader at Drake.

His current research agenda is looking at the intersection between leading and learning, and the change process as it has to do with individuals and organizations. A fun fact about Tom is that he was in a local rock band that played for Bill Clinton when he was a candidate for President, as well as at a Senator Harken event while he was President!
